A disadvantage of the small courtyards of older buildings is that they neither feel as private places or public, but more of a mixture. You do not have your own space, and encroaching partly in others' vicinity. You are visible all the time and can not create zones of your own.

A simple way to at least partially improve the situation is to try to create subdivisions. Small rooms or spaces may serve as temporary privatizations. For example, using the larger flower boxes or trellises. These may be mobile and even stand on wheels, to fairly easily be moved around and create temporary divisions. They can be combined or used as a storage space. Or temporary compost bin. (Click picture to advance.)
